Abstrait: To get adapt to the rugged topography, lots of bridges with tall piers have been constructed in west China. Because of large self-mass and long fundamental period, the failure progress of tall piers under excitation of earthquake records was significantly influenced by their higher modes. Considering the contribution from higher modes, presented paper investigated the damage and failure progress of tall piers using incremental dynamic analysis method. The results showed that with contribution of higher modes of piers, multiple plastic zones could form along pier height under strong earthquake; if current displacement based and capacity protective method were applied to tall piers, large errors would be led to.
