Abstrait:

The possibility of corrosion reducing the life-span of steel-frame buildings was recognized during the first construction of such buildings in the 1890s. The same designers who worked on the early steel-frame buildings stated publicly that this issue was a concern, but made no long-term effort to study the problem. After a 1903 report that steel at one such building was in good condition after five years in service, there was little discussion until facade failures from corrosion became a concern in the 1970s.
