Abstrait: In 2010, CH2M Hill undertook a feasibility study to investigate the provision of a new footbridge across the river Clyde in Glasgow. The project has since continued through detailed design of the preferred butterfly arch option and is currently on site with construction programmed to be completed by May 2014. The £5.5M footbridge design comprises two steel circular hollow section arches inclined outwards from the bridge at 30 degrees to the vertical, supporting a 90m long and 5m wide steel deck. In addition to providing a new pedestrian and cycle route, the footbridge’s unique deck cross section has been designed to carry several new services across the River. This will provide essential SmartGrid power, telecoms and high-speed broadband links to adjacent developments. Additionally, the bridge will carry two 600mm diameter water pipes which will allow all new social housing north of the Clyde to be heated from a centralised district heating station on the south of the river.
