This paper describes the design and the construction process of a new footbridge in Helsinki, Finland. The process began when City of Helsinki launched a bridge design competition in 2009 to find a bridge solution to a rather challenging location in terms of pre-existing infrastructure and high aesthetics demands. As an outcome of the competition Aurora Bridge were chosen to be designed and built during 2009-2012. First the paper gives an overlook to the competition phase and presents the bridge location with its challenges and specific boundary conditions. Secondly the structural concept is introduced with a review of the main structural components and accessories. Finally the construction process and case specific dynamic load model are briefly presented. |
