The development of adaptive structures will lead, through optimization and shape control of the structure since the beginning of the design process, to determine an optimal structural design to resist dynamic loads. In this paper, a study of an energy efficient, seismic responsive adaptive structure will be presented. Using a given basis model, the most preferable behaviour of energy transfer and internal force patterns between the components and the supporting system during an earthquake will be determined. Eventually we could use it to activate a whole adaptation mechanism of a specific structure through the transmission and re-distribution of that energy. This will allow the building to truly be an adaptive structure, instead of a passive structure controlled by active systems. |
