The Yangpu Bridge across the Huangpu River is a key transportation link in the development of the Shanghai area. Two structural schemes were investigated for the crossing, a suspension bridge and a cable-stayed bridge. Due to the soft soil conditions at the site, which would have made adequate anchorage of a suspension bridge a costly endeavour, the cable-stayed variant was elected. Since recent experience in China with composite girders had shown this girder system to be efficient, economical and within the capabilities of the local construction industry, it was once again chosen for the Yangpu Bridge. |
