The design and construction of bridges in urban areas is considered in this article. Appropriate design and construction methods are discussed in order to deal with urban constraints, noise and visual impact problems and the need to keep transportation systems permanently in operation. The occupancy of the site, the scale and typology of bridge solutions, and the integration of urban bridges with other transportation structures, are discussed on the basis of several solutions developed by the author. Urban bridges as landmarks for cities, are considered, based on a recent design case. |
