The ring road around Rome is the subject of an extended improvement project, whose aim is to widen the carriageways from two to three lanes in each direction. The first works, completed in 1999, concerned the eastern and southern quadrants, and included two existing side-by-side bridges over the Tevere River. The riverbed is about 70 m wide at the crossing site, whereas the distance between the embankments is about 360 m. This paper focuses on the solutions adopted for the deck of the new bridge and on the widening of the existing bridge deck. |
