One of the most interesting things in the development of bridge engineering is the exploration of new structural materials, like for example stainless steel with its excellent mechanical properties, magnificent durability and aesthetic possibilities. The use of new structural materials in bridge engineering constitutes a metaphor to the innovation and, at the same time, a vindication of the enormous value of engineering, as an impelling element of the development and progress of the society, building bridges for the future and paving the way to the ones that follow. This paper describes a composite stainless steel road bridge, recently built in Cala Galdana (Menorca), being the first road bridge in Europe and probably worldwide using stainless steel for the structure. |
