Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the concept of beauty, and it is a fit subject for structural engineers to consider. In today's materialistic world, feelings for aesthetic quality are largely underdeveloped, and that is why so many people doubt that aesthetic qualities in structures actually exist. Their existence is, however, clearly demonstrated by the fact that there are many structures in all cultures which are so beautiful that they attract multitudes of visitors, who often travel long distances to admire them. Given the impact of the aesthetic qualities of structures on society, it is clear that engineers have a duty to consider these qualities very seriously. |
