Revision and Technical Assistance of the S.João Bridge Project, Oporto, Portugal

The new S. João railway bridge over the Douro River is a prestressed concrete structure with a central span of 250 m, one of the greatest in the world of its structural type. Due to its unusual characteristics, some particular problems arose during the design and construction phases which were analyzed by the project revision team in collaboration with the owner, the designer and the contractor. In this paper, the implementation of the revision activities and the description of some special studies that were developed during the project, are presented.
