The rehabilitation of the Third Devil's Bridge was a challenging task for the project management, site engineers and contractors. After extensive evaluation of the bridge condition, the masonry arch and spandrels were found to be in excellent condition with no limitations on residual service life. In contrast, the condition of the supports and cross beams varied widely. In various zones, these elements were no longer structurally reliable in the medium term and significant repair or replacement was deemed necessary. Repair measures were decided based on the results of inspection and evaluation. The concept adopted was largely dictated by the available time and the climate. Installation work had to proceed irrespective of weather conditions. To meet the requirement for long service life, high grade structural materials and components were used. |
