A decision was made in 1994 to construct a new museum for Melbourne and the contract was won by international architectural competition which resulted in the 150 million USD project. The scheme forms a campus of individual buildings for specific use, connected by public pedestrian ways. A new 900-space, two-level underground car park between the Royal Exibition Building and its new Museum neighbour has on its roof the Event Plaza. Access to the Museum is via a 20 m high, glazed wall leading to the foyer and to an Orientation Galleria, leading to other public areas. |
