A large-scale experiment to develop the technology to design and construct such a mega-float is now in progress in Tokyo Bay. A floating structure is unaffected by water depth, soil conditions and even earthquakes. With properly engineered systems and services, mega floats also represent no threat to the ocean environment; indeed, they can even be dismantled or moved to another location if they are no longer needed, or desired, at a particular site. Ocean space utilization is an emerging discipline in Japan. Mega-floats can supplement land reclamation to create offshore infrastructure that is both highly functional and environmentally sound. |
