Crossing the narrow Ljubljanica River east of the capital Ljubljana was a part of the highway programme in Slovenia. The original conceptual design called for a series of single-span girders with several supports in the river. Several experts were consulted, and a cable-stayed solution with three parallel pylons 24 m high above the deck was finally selected as the most appropriate solution. The cable-stayed solution was chosen because it best satisfied various functional and ecological requirements. It was also seen as creating an attractive symbol for the nearby city. |
