Abstrait: The story of the Great Exhibition of 1851, and the development by Joseph Paxton of the “Crystal Palace” design for its accommodation, is well known. Less well known, however, is the role played by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in helping to get the revolutionary design accepted and in overcoming the practical problems of its construction. With the removal and rebuilding of the Crystal Palace on a larger scale at Sydenham Brunel's contribution was to be, quite literally, on a higher profile with the construction to his design of two 284ft high water towers.
