Abstrait:

The Bayan Baru Flyover in Penang is aimed to improve the traffic congestion along the existing Federal Route 6, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah at the existing roundabout at Bayan Baru and at the junction Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah/Jalan Aziz Ibrahim. Federal Route 6 is an important route in the road network within the island of Pulau Pinang because it links the commercial centre of Georgetown in the north to the industrial zone of Bayan Baru and the Bayan Lepas International Airport in the south. The project was implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD), Malaysia on a 'Design and Built' contract. The 'Design and Built' contractor was awarded the project to construct an approximately 1.7 km long viaduct including the improvement and upgrading of the existing Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and the intersections in January 2001. A Consultant was appointed for Civil and Structural, Electrical and Mechanical Consulting for the 'Design and Built' contractor. The original completion date was July 2003. In 2002, the construction company conducted additional traffic study to determine the traffic impact along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and the connecting roads after the construction of the viaduct. Based on the traffic study, it was proposed to the project owner – to extend the viaduct over the signalized junction of Jalan Mahsuri/Jalan Kampung Jawa/Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah by approximately 675 m in the southwest direction. The date of completion was revised to May 2004. The project was completed in August 2005 and the viaduct is in commission since then.
