Barqueta Bridge arose from a competition for the design and construction of two new bridges planned to connect the historic city of Sevilla over the Guadalquivir river with the Cartuja Island, where the Universal Exhibition 1992 has been held. The required span of 168 m, with low vertical clearance over the river water, led to the design of a steel bridge of the string-bow-type, composed of a unique arch that springs from two triangular frames from which the deck is suspended through a set of inclined stay cables. |
