Abstract:

Light weight concrete properties and applications

The light weight concretes are in many circumstances an easy and effective alternative to solve problems related to the weight of some structures. The mechanical properties of the light weight concrete will depend directly on the apparent density of the concrete itself and at the same time, the density depends on the proportion of the used light weight aggregates. Even light weight concretes, with a compressive strength up to 80 MPa, have been manufactured. In this concrete the pull out strength and the shear strength, as well as the Young?s modulus, are reduced - always depending on the density of the light weight concrete - in comparison with a conventional concrete with the same compressive strength. Its special thermal and fireproof characteristics make it particularly useful in those elements that are exposed to high temperature or fire.
