A recurrent claim when designing truss grids is the concurrent need for equilibrium and optimality. Based on a clear decomposition of the four fundamental structural concepts (equilibrium, geometry, kinematics, material law), the principia design method is developed to address this demand. The form finding problem is handled through the force density equations while the structural analysis process is completed by introducing information on kinematics. The global resolution is driven by a simultaneous analysis and design optimization algorithm. Additionally, to ensure the convergence towards smooth solutions, a specific sensitivity filtering is performed. These building blocks result into an integrated design strategy merging the three main steps of structural design – form finding, analysis, optimization – taking into account project requirements such as geometric constraints. |
