Due to its super height, curved façade, and long structural period, the Shanghai tower is susceptible to wind induced responses. Wind tunnel studies were thoroughly conducted to investigate the wind loads and wind responses of the tower. Firstly, a detailed wind climate study was conducted to determine the design wind speeds. Secondly, Aerodynamic optimization studies were conducted using the high-frequency force balance technique. Then detailed wind tunnel studies, including high-order mode effect study, aeroelastic model test, and high Reynolds number test, were conducted. The overall wind-induced responses including the aerodynamic damping are measured directly by the aeroelastic model tests. The high Reynolds number effects are evaluated due to the mismatch of Reynolds numbers between wind tunnel test and full scale response. Finally, the main results obtained from the structural design for wind loading are discussed.
