The steady increase in traffic loads in recent decades and the growing number of overweight vehi- cles crossing the bridges was not foreseen when many existing bridges were designed. If one were to compare the internal forces of today's code actions with the bygone ones in a purely deterministic manner approx. 1500 bridges were to be structurally reassessed on Swiss National High- way System only. A probabilistic screening, on the other hand, which is also permitted by the Swiss codes, was deployed to evaluate reliability index in order to sort out bridges that meet reliability index requirements. Due to the large number of bridges, it proved purposeful to determine under which circumstances the costs of a structural analysis and any resulting measures are justified by reducing the operational risk. In other words: When is the value of information from a structural analysis net positive? |
