Selected details related with the development of erection engineering for a highly complex cable stayed bridge for the Sydney Metro North West (SMN), Skytrain section, in Australia are presented. An overview is provided of some of the key architectural and technical constraints that underpinned the erection options of the precast (PC) post-tensioned segmental structure. Options for the erection of the superstructure and the steel-concrete composite pylons are briefly discussed with the focus on an innovative hybrid option combining the free cantilever technique with span-by-span erection of the superstructure using an overhead gantry. The importance of staged construction simulation is discussed and some of the key parameters to which it may be sensitive to are outlined. The implementation of a robust protocol for monitoring and updating the evolving structural geometry during erection and the use of the simulation for verification and validation are discussed. |
