The proposed Beauharnois Canal Bridge is part of a 42km extension of Highway 30 in Quebec, Canada, and is located between the towns of Beauharnois and Melocheville. The bridge consists of twin composite box girder sections with bluff concrete edge parapets. An aerodynamic assessment was carried out in early stages of the project which highlighted the risks associated with vortex- induced vibrations, particularly during the construction stages. Extensive wind tunnel tests were conducted to evaluate the aeroelastic performance of the bridge at various construction stages and in permanent condition. Temporary mitigation measures and construction staging sequences were developed to improve the performance of the decks during construction. |
