The 1055m long cable stayed steel bridge at Ewijk was built in 1976. It requires renovation to provide a solution for fatigue damage in the deck through application of a high strength concrete overlay. The clearance for navigation traffic is also to be increased and a porous asphalt overlay will be applied. This paper elaborates on the assessment and strengthening design of the steel box girder, which sees a 50% increase in dead load due to the applied overlays as well as increased live loading. An effective strengthening concept was found by stiffening of panels and adding two lines of vertical bracing in the box girder. Both activate more of the existing steel in the box girder, and the bracing provides a new shear path. Increased navigation clearance is obtained by jacking the bridge over its nine pier supports, so that a 1250mm raise in midspan is achieved gradually. |
