Story high buildings need to be designed against robustness (structural integrity). Robustness is fulfilled, if local failure does not lead to a comprehensive structural failure with serious consequence as result. Two main approaches are normally used in design: the ‘indirect design’ specifying minimum levels of tie forces, continuity and ductility of the structure or the ‘direct design’ to ensure a structure’s ability to absorb local damage and resist disproportionate failure. Newly developed innovative prefabricated solutions for story high buildings combining prefabricated aircrete components and steel structures will be presented, including both of the above mentioned design approaches. The design methods and the underlying theoretical approaches will be examined and evaluated. The benefits and disadvantages between different solutions will be evaluated. Further a case study of the prefabricated concrete modular building system developed will be presented. |
