The paper discusses the ability of a concrete slab to resist the concentration of shear force when a wheel load approaches a line of support. Design rules used for a current project are presented. Even though this situation occurs in almost all bridges it is not covered in design codes. The wider topic of the paper takes this surprising fact as a starting point in a discussion of the nature of design codes. Is the content of codes pushed by the research data available or pulled by the needs of designers? What should be in a code? |
