Massive concrete elements are occasionally casted in different stages. Along with accounting for the safe transmission of shear flow between the different casted stages, the constraint imposed by the hardened concrete to the newly casted concrete is to be considered. This may require special reinforcement to avoid propagated cracks due to shrinkage as well as thermal effects. The demand of adding shrinkage reinforcement was revealed through parametric study accounting for geometrical, construction, material, and environmental parameters. For this purpose finite element analysis was incorporated in which time-dependent material characteristic is accounted for. Moreover, heat of hydration as well as shrinkage is modeled. The prediction of the tensile stresses is carried out and accordingly the reinforcement demand is highlighted. |
