This paper is about cable-stayed bridges built in India during the last forty years. The common ground for these bridges not only is their location and that most are made with composite decks, also their stories touch many of the themes of this conference. They are large scale infrastructure projects in a rapidly developing country where old and new need to learn to coexist at a fast pace and they certainly illustrate the issue of aesthetic design. Several cable-stayed bridges from the author´s office and the issue of composite decks for this bridge type serve as examples to illustrate how bridge design has evolved in India from the 1970s until today. |
