In order to resolve the problem that the old City Hall Complex of Tokyo in the Marunouchi district had become old, scattered and cramped, it was decided in 1985 to construct a new City Hall and Assembly Hall for Tokyo in the new commercial-business district of Shinjuko. Therefore, a design and planning competition was held between nine nominated teams of architects to select a master plan for this new City Hall Complex. Kenzo, Tange, Urbanists & Architects won this competition in early 1986, and performed the practical design in partnership with Muto & Associates who was in charge of the structural design. Construction work started in April 1988 and was completed in March 1991. A first article reported on architectural and structural aspects of the project. It appeared in Structural Engineering International 4/91. The present article deals with further structural analysis aspects of the City Hall Complex. |
