The Renaissance basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli shelters one of the most important of St. Francis' shrines underneath its 63 m high dome. A recent earthquake damaged the dome lantern and it nearly collapsed onto the memorial. The repair and upgrading, funded by the Ministry of Public Works, Office for Umbria, has been a limited but unusual application of seismic engineering. |
