A New Identity

The Shelby Street Bridge, in Nashville, Tennessee, was one of the first in the country to employ reinforced-concrete trusses in a bowstring-type design, so when officials wanted to remove it, the surrounding community objected. A combination of reconstruction and reuse enabled engineers to preserve the crossing as a significant pedestrian bridge.
