When evaluating the condition and safety of a steel structure following a fire, an issue of concern is the mechanical properties of the steel after the fire. The exposure of the steel to high temperatures during the fire, and the subsequent cooling of the steel after the fire can potentially affect the mechanical properties of the steel. A testing program was undertaken by the authors to measure the mechanical properties of ASTM A992 steel after being subjected to various patterns of heating and cooling. This paper presents results of the test program and provides data on the effect of various heating and cooling cycles on key mechanical properties, including yield strength, tensile strength, elastic modulus, elongation, Charpy V-Notch(CVN) impact values, and hardness. |
