In this paper a mathematical model for the transmission loss of layered structures is presented, for longitudinal and transverse waves. The model can be used both for harmonic and impact excitation, and includes the visco-elastic characteristics of the material layers. The model has been verified experimentally for several vibrating systems, and a good conformity between measured values and theoretical prediction has been demonstrated. The model can be applied to the design and evaluation of systems for impact sound attenuation in buildings, for the specification of elastic inserts for the prevention of noise propagation in buildings or structures, or for the design of vibration isolation systems for machines. |
