Luukkaansalmi Bridge is located in the City of Lappeenranta in South-East Finland near the mouth of the Saimaa Canal. This canal connects the shipping lanes of the so-called Finish Lake District with the sea. The bridge rises almost 30 m above the water level, providing views of the Saimaa lake system, the surrounding urban area and the factories of the local forest-based industry. The bridge is 420 m long. Its main span of 120 m is the longest composite-girder bridge span in Finland. Completed in summer 1989, the bridge replaced one of Finland's busiest ferries, which during the summer season carried an average traffic flow of over 2,000 vehicles per day. |
