An expansion program for a grain terminal in Western Australia called for the construction of fourteen 10,000 t wheat storage silos 45 m tall, and a 60 m tall workinghouse, as well as a receiving station and related transfer systems. The project took three years to complete from the owner's first conceptual work. The original construction tender comprised a silo design with a reinforced concrete hopper. An alternative all-steel silo design, however, was selected, which allowed concrete work to be completed at ground level early in the project while eliminating such potential problems as reinforcement congestion, construction access difficulties for the time-consuming concrete hopper/ringbeams/columns structure. |
