In demolishing and replacing the Franklin Boulevard/Thornton Road Bridge, near Sacramento, California, designers and builders encountered a variety of environmental challenges — including requirements for floodplain management, protection of certain plant and animal species, and seismic stability. But what proved especially challenging was the safeguarding of a large population of Mexican free-tailed bats.
