Pennsylvanias Department of Transportation has invested $3.6 million in developing the concept and software for a Bridge Management System that will help determine the needs for maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement of all bridges in the state. With the system, the managers can set priorities and make the best use of designated funds. The project began as an expansion of the Structure Inventory Records System, integrating existing databases and adding new ones. The system operates on a mainframe in Harrisburg, but most entries will be made from local engineering district and maintenance offices, which have on-line access to it. |
