Abstract:

On the early history of modern concrete - Part I: Jetties and breakwaters

The history of modern concrete can be traced back to the Italian Renaissance period. Some of the earliest recorded early modern uses of concrete are in hydraulic engineering, particularly the construction of jetties and breakwaters. These applications and the technologies developed around them are analyzed in the present contribution, the first of a three-part series of articles on the early modern history of concrete prior to the introduction of reinforcement. The parts to follow will deal with the construction of canal locks and early concrete vaults, respectively.
