Abstract: |
The research project ABROCK - Analysis of Penetration and Cutter-Wear for TBM-Tunnelling in Hard Rock - is concerned with a subject that has not yet been solved satisfyingly, although it is almost as old as mechanised tunnelling. The use of a new generation of large diameter hard rock TBMs, which started in the 1990s, was a reason to take up the subject once again. Six university institutes from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the USA combined to form a research network in order to develop a new or better forecasting model. The university institutes are working in close touch with client organisations, tunnel contractors, consultants, TBM manufacturers and experts. As the available data mostly comes from the Alps, and as the involved university institutes are mostly based in the Alps or are closely connected with the Alps, the project has been given the working name "Alpine Model". |
