Abstract:

General rules and rules for building - explanations on structure and application of DIN EN 1993-1-1.

This article gives an overview of the design of steel structures according to EN 1993-1-1. By comparison of DIN 18800 and EN 1993-1-1 common design rules are pointed out. For a better understanding and the safety of application detailed remarks on the background are given for particular rules. This article covers the basics of design according to EN 1993-1-1, the choice of imperfections and methods of global analysis, the classification of cross sections and the cross sectional verification (without stability matters). It is part of a series of articles in this issue dealing with EN 1993.
