Abstract: The current focus in Germany is more on strengthening and retrofitting of existing infrastructures than on their renewal. This approach, which has been enforced by the government in the last decades, leads to sustainable infrastructure and takes into account the limited natural and financial resources. Consequently, many concepts for strengthening have been developed and applied in many cases with great success. Because every existing structure is unique, an individual retrofitting concept has to be developed for each and every case. However, well established strengthening and retrofitting concepts can be applied by implementing modifications.
