Notes:

The Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste was an innovator, designing soaring structures which appear to defy gravity.

Dieste's use of traditional construction materials such as brickwork shares innovations with others working in more modern materials. He also developed many significant new construction techniques, such as pre-stressing, ahead of his contemporaries. He was an innovator of both form and materials, re-discovering and re-interpreting a traditional material in a modern, technically sophisticated manner.
