Abstrakt: The Yokohama Bay Bridge is a long-span cable-stayed bridge constructed before the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake, so the seismic safety of the bridge from ground motions equivalent to those caused by that earthquake was analyzed. Earthquakes in Japan can be broadly classified into two types: the large earthquake which takes place in the subduction zone of the Pacific plate with a magnitude of order 8 with far-field or moderately far-field ground motion, and near-field ground motion caused by inland earthquake which may occur beneath the site or close to the site.Probable ground motions occurring along or in the immediate vicinity of tectonic plate boundaries such as oceanic trenches were calculated using fault rupture models. Ground motions of shallow-focused inland earthquakes were taken from the standard ground motions currently used for bridge design in Japan from 1997.Nonlinear dynamic analyses were conducted on the basis of those ground motions to identify parts of the bridge that are likely to suffer major damage or that are likely to affect other parts of the bridge. Whether or not each of the expected cases of damage would be acceptable was determined, the effects of different acceptable cases of damage on other structures were also studied by using the processes of a retrofit study, and a seismic retrofit design of the bridge was proposed. …
