Mersey Gateway from the Air:The footage in this video, which was captured last month, shows both the scale of the project and how the hundreds of people working across the site are pressing on to ensure it opens as planned this autumn.
The film follows the route of the new bridge from north to south – starting at the north approach viaduct as it crosses the saltmarsh and Widnes and moving across the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal to the construction of the new Astmoor Viaduct in Runcorn.
The incredible bridge-building machines and huge cranes being used across the main bridge site are clearly visible as the gaps between the bridge deck start to close. The footage also gives some stunning views of the Mersey Estuary and the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

Mersey Gateway Movable Scaffolding System (MSS):The MSS is a large piece of construction equipment, which once assembled, will attach to the bridge piers and enable the elevated approach viaducts to be built over the Mersey estuary.
It is being put together on site and will be 157m long, 22m wide and will weigh 1500 tonnes when fully assembled. It will take around three to four months to construct and will be on site for around 19 months.
The MSS will act as a giant concrete mould for the deck of the approach viaducts, which will be constructed in sections (known as ‘spans’) of approx 70m in length. It will take up to two weeks to build each span.
The MSS has been designed specifically for this project. When the bridge is complete, the equipment will be dismantled and recycled.

Mersey Gateway Bridge - Movable Scaffolding System Trinity Trial Launches - September 2015:The trial shows the MSS deck sections being dropped to separate each beam, then each section is moved sideways, then forwards and backwards. The short clip at the end is the nose being moved from side to side - it needs to do this to get round the gentle curve in the approach viaduct.

Mersey Gateway Bridge - Concrete pour for the base of the south pylon:On 3 & 4 August 2015 we poured 200 loads of concrete, a total of 1400m³, to form the base of the south pylon of the Mersey Gateway Bridge. The pour took 24 hours 45 minutes, finishing 2 hours ahead of schedule. The concrete will take around 90 days to reach full strength.

Mersey Gateway Bridge - Concrete pour for the base of the north pylon:On 29-30 July 2015 we poured 175 loads of concrete, a total of 1200m³, to form the base of the north pylon of the Mersey Gateway Bridge. The pour took around 25 hours and the concrete will take around 90 days to reach full strength.

A total of 3 pylons up to 125 m high carry the new bridge in North-West England which spans around 1,000 m over the River Mersey. Together with the two approach bridges, the Mersey Gateway Bridge is 2,130 m long. The project-specific self-climbing formwork from PERI ensured crane-free working operations, in all weather conditions.

PERI’s planning also took into consideration the cost-effective use of materials: The SB Brace Frames were used for bracket-type pylon extensions as well as the pier heads on the foreland bridges.
