Even as the construction of the parallel Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel is on-going, the Division of Highways begins design on a parallel tunnel to eventually carry two lanes of eastbound traffic on Interstate 70.

18 August 1975

Mining and support work begins.

November 1975

Actual mining begins.

January 1978

Colorado's Fifty-First General Assembly passes a resolution requesting that the Highway Commission name the second bore for the late Edwin C. Johnson.

21 December 1979

Opened to traffic.

Notes

With the East portal 3401 m above sea level the Eisenhower / Johnson Memorial Tunnels are the world's highest road tunnel.
