Chronology

Bally's originally opens as the MGM Grand. With 2084 rooms, it is the largest hotel in the world at that time.

21 November 1980

Wiring behind a wall smoulders for hours before bursting into a flash fire shortly after 7 am that spreads at 19 ft/sec (5.8 m/sec) across the casino and sends smoke into the building's air circulation system. 84 die and 679 are injured of 5000 persons in the resort. Contributory causes include faulty ducting, laundry chutes, and non-existent sprinkler system.

1981

A new tower is constructed as part of post-fire repairs.

1986

Sold to Bally's Entertainment.
