On May 30th 2011, construction on the new Corinthians Arena in the east of São Paulo had begun. It was completed in time for the opening of the Soccer World Cup in 2014.
The stadium had been realized with 65,807 seats in order to comply with FIFA regulations for hosting the opening match of the Soccer World Cup in 2014. After the dismantling of the temporary stands, it has a capacity of 48,000 seats.
Designed by Anibal Coutinho
The stadium, which was designed by the famous Brazilian architect Anibal Coutinho, had been built on an area of approx. 200,000 m². It is the new home of the traditional soccer club Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.
In order to shorten the time needed for construction, precast concrete supports that were post-tensioned using post-tensioning bars were used for building the tribunes. Protendidos DYWIDAG supplied approx. 1,300 m of Ø 32mm post-tensioning bars with accessories for the construction of the precast concrete supports. This system had been successfully used at about 4,900 anchorage points.
