Abstract:

Two projects have been undertaken in order to provide road connections between other islands in Austevoll. One of these projects connects the islands of Stolmen and Selbjørn. The project consists of 1800 m of new road and includes the Stolma Bridge, with an overall length of 467 m and a main span of 301 m. In the early stages of the project, the Owner investigated different alternatives for the road link, including a suspension bridge, cable-stayed bridge, free-cantilever bridge and an underwater tunnel. Mainly due to costs, the free-cantilever bridge solution was chosen. The adopted solution was chosen on the basis of economic, landscape, aesthetic and historical considerations.
