Abstract:

Resource-efficient lightweight wood-concrete composite constructions

In several research projects of the Department of Structural Design and Timber Engineering (ITI) at the Vienna University of Technology (VUT) industrial lightweight wood particle concrete products made of wood chips, pellet, sawdust, wood wool, etc. are applied as shear stressed intermediate layers in wall and floor systems with the purpose to develop energy and emission efficient economically feasible solutions as well as demonstrate their application in pilot projects (renovation of buildings and new construction). The developed systems combine variant types of timber elements with load-bearing lightweight wood particle concrete products. It was strived to achieve an optimized use of materials according to their mechanical properties and an adjusted allocation to the stress zones of the composite wall and floor elements while at the same time taking into account thermal and acoustic requirements.
Experiences in the field of resource efficient building construction show that lightweight wood particle concrete for structural construction holds a number of interesting prospects [1]. Therefore, it is a main aim of the research projects, based on existing investigations, to gain broader knowledge of the key parameters of the material lightweight wood particle concrete.
This article gives an insight into previous developments and presents technical options to bring together raw material chains in composite elements. The developed innovative constructive concepts are, comprehensively described based on the results of the research projects.
